A Farewell Letter to My Little Missionary

To My Little Missionary,

Why in the world would you leave the comfort of your home, become a missionary, go to an island no one knows about, and voluntarily stay there for a year?

I know why. It’s because you have a servant heart.

You’ve always been a risk taker, a dreamer, a doer. The fact that you’re doing this doesn’t surprise me whatsoever. You’ve shown that a comfortable lifestyle means nothing when there are people in the world in need of your service. You’ve decided to challenge yourself to see more of the world and not restrict yourself to the material pleasures that surround you on a daily basis. What you’re doing should be recognized because it will be the hardest and the most trying opportunity you’ve faced this far but no doubt it’s worth every second.

Now, I’m very selfish. I don’t want you to leave because my heart isn’t ready to be apart from you for so long. As your older sister I can’t help but feel nervous and overprotective. I can’t physically be there for you when you need me and that frustrates me. The only way I find peace in this whole process is trusting that God will take care of you. I know He will. I know He’ll do more than just protect you.

He will give you company when you feel completely alone.

He will provide you with beautiful portraits of life that you wouldn’t get here.

He will bring people into your life who will challenge your way of thinking.

He will relate to your pain when you witness unjust suffering.

He will offer you the opportunity to witness to those who are suffering.

He will become the source of your dependency and trust.

How can I not be happy knowing that God will be with you every step of the way.  We, your friends, family, and community are going to miss your laughter, your ideas, and your presence. Yet, there is nothing but pride knowing that the one we love is letting God lead in her life. You’ve spent hours preparing for this year from paperwork to fundraising to packing. Now it’s come time for you to step onto that plane and say hello to an experience of a lifetime. Don’t be scared. Don’t be anxious. Don’t be sad. Keep your head up and remember that we love you.

Thank you for willingly following God’s call for you. It’s brave and honorable and I hope I can do something as impactful as this in my life. Thank you for sharing your laughs, your loyalty,  your knack for children, your tears, and every minute of your time in mission work. Thanks for making this world happier. I can’t be more proud of you.

Now go have some fun will ya? I’m starting to get all emotional here. And don’t forget to take pictures of EVERYTHING. Especially Hawaii.

I love you Ashley.
